Help! I am on the first page of Google, but no one is buying anything.

If you have tried or are currently investing in search engine marketing and it is not working, here are a few likely reasons and potential solutions.

Low Search Volume

If you are ranked on the first page of Google, or any search engine for that matter, for keywords that no one uses to conduct searches, you will not see any results.  You have to make sure you are focusing your efforts on keywords that people actually use in search engines.

Solution: Conduct keyword research and find new terms that have significant search voulume.

Bonus Solution: If you have a product or service that no one has ever heard of and no one is directly searching for it, try finding keywords that relate to the benefits the prooduct or service offers.

Kewords Not Relevant or Too Broad

If you sell red Corvetts and your website ranks on the first page for keywords related to black BMW’s, you are not going to convert anyone into a sale.  While some people may be persuaded to buy something other than what they were looking for, it is generally a waste of time to focus efforts on keywords that are not specifc to what you are selling.

Similarly, if you sell red Corvettes and you are advertising under the keyword “car” you are not likely to produce good results. The term is too broad.  Some people typing in the word car may not even be looking to buy a car; maybe they are looking to rent.  And certainly there is only a very small portion of the buying public that types that word into a search engine specifically looking for a red Corvette.

Solution: Make sure the keywords you are targeting are narrow and targeted to what you sell.

Poor Clickability

More often than not, people that have tried search engine marketing and have not experienced profitable results have not spent much time optimizing their websites ability to convert browsers into buyers.

Solution: make your site more user-friendly by organizing navigation and content in a way that truly addresses your customers’ questions and concerns.

Bonus Tip: make sure you have a strong call to action that is easy to find on every page—like the one we use below.
